But where was Dawn Evans?

The JMU community sat in hopes yesterday watching the WNBA Draft show on ESPNU. Predicted to go as the No. 10 pick, senior guard Dawn Evans waited to hear her name called. Number 10 came and went, and so did the last pick in the draft, number 36. A community in disappointment also sat in shock, asking the question, “Why not Dawn?”

Shattering records and receiving awards, it seemed as if she would be in high demand. This season alone, Dawn has set a new school and CAA career points record with 2,667 points, won The V Foundation Comeback Award, Virginia State Player of the Year, and CAA Player of the Year. On top of those accomplishments, she was third in the country in scoring with 23.1 points per game.

Shortly after hearing the news of not being drafted, Dawn tweeted “Thank you everyone for the support!” This morning, she had the same positive attitude with saying, “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift that’s why they call it the present!”

What was the WNBA thinking letting a great player like this slip away? I guess she could always stay at JMU an extra year to play club or intramural basketball– I’d draft her!
